Staying centered when the stakes are high: Lessons on focus and resilience

Life is full of moments when we’re tested, whether preparing for a career milestone, navigating personal challenges, or simply trying to keep our composure in stressful situations. Staying centered and focused under pressure is a skill that requires practice, but it can make all the difference in how we show up for ourselves and others.



Consider the experience of an athlete preparing for a major competition. They spend months training, visualizing their success, and building mental toughness. Yet, on the day of the event, unexpected challenges like bad weather or equipment malfunctions can throw them off course. What separates those who succeed from those who falter isn’t just their physical preparation; it’s their ability to stay focused despite the chaos. This lesson resonates deeply with me as I reflect on my own experiences navigating challenges, both personal and professional. One particular moment stands out: my journey to pass the CAPM exam.


In any high-pressure situation, distractions are inevitable. Whether you’re an athlete facing external obstacles or a legal professional managing tight deadlines and complex cases, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by everything that feels out of your control. For me, this chaos was most evident during my CAPM exam preparation. Like many professionals juggling multiple responsibilities, I struggled to prioritize studying amidst work and life commitments. Negative thoughts crept in and doubts about my abilities and fears of failure had me procrastinating for years. When I finally committed to taking the exam, I encountered setbacks that tested my patience and focus. Technical issues during the test threatened to derail my progress entirely. In that moment, I realized how easy it is to let frustration take over but also how important it is to stay grounded and keep moving forward.


What helped me succeed wasn’t just studying harder or longer; it was shifting my mindset. I reminded myself that setbacks are part of the process and that staying calm in the face of adversity would ultimately lead to better outcomes. This realization mirrors what athletes often experience when they encounter unexpected challenges during competition. They don’t dwell on what went wrong; instead, they focus on what they can control in the moment. Similarly, during my exam, I chose to breathe deeply, refocus on each question one at a time, and trust in the preparation I had done. By staying present and focusing on solutions rather than problems, I was able to complete the exam successfully even with lingering frustrations about technical glitches.


My experience taught me valuable lessons about staying centered when everything seems to be going wrong. One of the most important lessons was learning how to shift my perspective during moments of stress or frustration. Instead of focusing on what was going wrong, I asked myself what I could do right now to move forward. This simple mental shift helped me regain control over my thoughts and actions in situations where it felt like everything was falling apart.


Another key takeaway was the importance of mindfulness in high-pressure situations. Practicing techniques like deep breathing or grounding exercises allowed me to stay present and calm when distractions threatened to pull me off course. Mindfulness isn’t just about relaxation; it’s about creating space between your emotions and your actions so you can respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.


Preparation also played a significant role in building my confidence and resilience during the exam process. While my first attempt at the CAPM exam was marked by insufficient preparation, my second attempt was different because I approached it with intention. I invested time in studying thoroughly, reviewing notes carefully, and visualizing success as someone who had already passed the exam. This intentional preparation gave me a sense of control over my circumstances and reduced much of the anxiety I had felt before.


Of course, setbacks are inevitable no matter how much preparation you put in, but embracing them as learning opportunities can make all the difference in how you respond to them. During my exam, technical issues like a lagging cursor tested my patience repeatedly. Instead of letting frustration take over completely, I reminded myself that these setbacks were temporary obstacles rather than permanent roadblocks. This mindset allowed me to keep moving forward with confidence instead of giving up entirely.


Taking breaks when needed was another strategy that helped me stay focused during moments of overwhelm. Halfway through the exam, I paused briefly to stretch, rest my eyes, and take deep breaths before continuing with renewed clarity. These small moments of self-care made a big difference in helping me reset mentally and physically so I could finish strong.


Staying centered isn’t just about achieving success in one specific moment; it’s about cultivating habits that allow us to show up as our best selves consistently over time. Whether you’re preparing for an exam or tackling a challenging project at work, maintaining focus under pressure builds resilience that carries over into every aspect of life.
